10 Books to Movies 2013

I know I’ve said it before but I love to read books before I see them as movies.  In fact I’ve been known to read books simply because they are going to be hitting the big screen.  So I decided to to a little research into books to movies in 2013.  Here are the 10 books to movies in 2013 I have either read or will read.  This list is in no particular order, though I will start with the books I’ve already read.

Great_Gatsby_Cover

1. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Like many others, this was one of my favorite books I read in back in high school.  I don’t remember the story all that well these days, but before it is remade for the big screen I want to reread this and revisit the Jazz Era of the 1920s.  I can’t wait for the movie to come out and see what Baz Lauhrman does in his version.  And I’m curious how Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby compares to Robert Redford’s.

Have you read The Great Gatsby? Are you excited to see it in theaters?

Right now the scheduled release date is: May 10, 2013

2. Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

I know I just read this book and just posted my thoughts, so if you’d like to read them, click here.  I’m not gonna lie, I read this mostly because I knew that Josh Duhamel would be the main male character.  But to be honest, this book wasn’t any different then other Nicholas Sparks, it has an element of cheese, sadness and of course romance.  I’m really excited to see the landscape of North Carolina in this movie; though Sparks’ books are often set in North Carolina, the movies aren’t always.

Did you read Safe Haven or pass on this Nicholas Sparks novel?

The movie release date is currently set for: Valentine’s Day 2013

Catching_Fire_Cover3. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

I read this book a while back and while I enjoyed the Hunger Games the most and my interest disappeared more and more with each book of the trilogy but I am still excited to see how this book translates to the big screen.  I really enjoyed how the first book came to life last year and have no doubt this next movie. Catching Fire, will be as equally entertaining.

You can read my thoughts on Catching Fire here.

Are you a fan of the Hunger Games?  Will you see Catching Fire?  This is one of 2 movies released this year that will star Jennifer Lawrence on my list.  Looks like she has a busy year ahead for her.

The scheduled release date is November 22, 2013.

The_Hunter_Cover
4. The Hunter by Richard Stark

This is probably the book I’m at least excited to read and I’m not really that excited to see the movie, but I’ve actually heard the Parker series by Richard Stark is good so I’d like to give it a try.

The Hunter is being released in theaters under the title Parker.  Jason Statham is playing the title role and his costar is Jennifer Lopez.

Have you read any of these Richard Stark books? Is it worth the read?  Have you seen the movie? Is it any good?

The movie was release in theaters this past Friday, January 25, 2013.

Beautiful_Creatures_Cover5. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

I’d never really heard about this book until all the hype about the movie coming out.  And it just so happens that my cousin has this book, so I can borrow it and give it a try.  I’m sure it will be a quick and easy read since it is aimed at young adults.

Beautiful Creatures the movie looks like it’s got a great cast that includes Jeremy Irons, Emmy Rossum, and Emma Thompson, which gives me hope the story isn’t too bad cheesy.

Have you read Beautiful Creatures? Do you recommend it?

The scheduled release date for this movie is also on Valentine’s Day of this year.

I know this post is getting long, and I apologize but we are half way through the list of 10 Books to Movies 2013.

Enders_game_cover6. Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

Several of my friends’s on Goodreads have read this book and given it great reviews and even more friends have it on their lists to read.  Needless to say I’ve been pondering giving this one a read for awhile now and with it being made into a movie this year, I better get on it.

Set in space, The Ender’s Game, would most definitely be a sci-fi novel, but one with an interesting twist it would appear because it takes place after an alien war on earth that nearly annihilated the human race.

Starring Harrison Ford makes this movie even more appearing.  Have you read The Ender’s Game?  What did you think?

The movie is set to be released November 1, 2013.

Devils_Knot_Book_Cover
7. Devil’s Knot by Mara Leveritt

Though this book was actually written back in 2002, it is just now being made into a movie.  The story line sounds a bit scary but I have decided that since Reese Witherspoon is in it, it can’t be too bad, right?

Devil’s Knot is about the gruesome murder of 3 teenagers in what looks like a Satanic ritual.  Along with Reese Witherspoon, this movie also stars Steven Moyer and Colin Firth.

Have you read Devil’s Knot or know anyone who has?

There is no specific release date yet, but it is set to come out in theaters some time in 2013.

serena_cover

8. Serena by Ron Rash

This is the second book on my list starring Jennifer Lawrence and once again she gets to star in a movie with Bradley Cooper.

If this weren’t coming out as I movie I probably wouldn’t have known this book existed but it actually sounds pretty interesting.  The story of Serena is about a newlywed couple that moves from Boston to North Carolina to create a timber empire in pre-depression era.

Anyone read Serena?  What are your thoughts?  Would you see the movie?

There isn’t a set release date for this movie either, just that it should be out in 2013.

Your_Voice_In_My_Head_Cover9. Your Voice in My Head by Emma Forrest

There is just something about this book that intrigues me.  Your Voice in My Head is the story of a 22 year old journalist from England that moves to New York City only to make some alarming self discoveries.  This book is compared to a modern fairy tale and seems like it should make an interesting movie.

Starring Emma Watson as the main character, there are still quite a few details still being worked out on the movie and technically this may not come out in 2013, but I really wanted to read it.

Did you read Your Voice in My Head?

Release date: unknown

city_of_bones_cover

10. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones seems like it is most likely in the Sci-Fi category as well but it seems to have garnered some great reviews from my Goodreads friends and I thought I would give it a read.

The movie will be released under the title The Mortal Instruments and is mostly like geared to a young adult audience.

What did you think of City of Bones?

The movie will be released in theaters August 23, 2013.

Do you know of any books I left off this list? I’d love to know what they are!

  2. Erica and I used to blab on and on about Ender’s Game at work…I am surprised you don’t know that book backwards and forwards by osmosis…. 🙂
