Here is a portion of the synopsis I wrote for my novel, Creative Chaos. . .
Jill Wilson is a recent college graduate starting her first job as a graphic designer. She scrapbooks her transition from college to the real world and also the memories she creates with her friends. Amy, Jill’s best friend and college roommate is her constant advisor on all things related to boys. Close friends Cooper and Jason were Jill and Amy’s neighbors in college. Through Jason, Jill met Sarah who will one day marry Jason once he finishes medical school.
Once a month Jill attends a crop (or work night) at her local scrapbook store, Memories Forever, where she has assembled a group of friends called the Crop Girls. Each one of these ladies is at a different stage of their lives but they are all connected through their hobby, scrapbooking
Jill’s job opens the door for not only one potential romance but two. Adam is an amazingly attractive guy sitting in the waiting room when Jill interviews for her first job. He is so attractive that Jill has a hard time concentrating on the paperwork she has been asked to complete. Fortunately, Adam is also hired and Jill runs into him her first week on the job.
A few months into the job, both Jill and Adam are sent to New York for departmental meetings, giving them an opportunity to see where their relationship leads. Jill is happily surprised to find that she and Adam are on the same flight to New York; this will give her a few hours of one-on-one time with him. Upon arriving in the city, Adam asks Jill to meet him for a drink after the required work obligations have been met. Jill attended her first meeting full of anticipation and excitement about her date with Adam, only to reunite with a friend from high school, Brian. The last few years have been good to Brian; he is even more handsome than Jill remembered.
The trip to New York leaves Jill confused and excited to see how things progress with Adam even though she had the chance to get to know Brian again and would normally be interested in him if Adam weren’t in the picture.
Once back in Dallas, Jill and Adam begin spending more and more time together, all the while Brian begins emailing Jill everyday. Jill decides to see what happens with Adam because he is in Dallas and Brian is in Chicago.
The relationship with Adam isn’t without hiccups. First there is the annual Halloween Party where Jill runs into her college sweetheart, Sean, who she finds in a compromising situation. She has no problem walking away, but Sean creates a scene and has to be escorted out. Second, after a nice, peaceful date, Adam walks Jill to her door only to find it open and burglars busting through the front door knocking Jill and Adam over.
Over Thanksgiving, Adam goes back home to Colorado while Brian comes home and spends time with his parents and Jill. While she is sad that Adam is gone, Brian proves to be just as much fun in person as he is over email. They run into each other at an engagement party for a high school friend and make plans to hang out at a time which also happens to be Jill’s niece Haley’s birthday party. Brian doesn’t mind attending a little kids party one bit and ends up impressing Jill’s entire family. Her mom and sister are especially disappointed when they learn that Jill and Brian are just friends.
A week later Jill is a bridesmaid in a high school friend’s wedding and is excited for everyone to see her good looking date, Adam. Except the wedding doesn’t quite go as planned; the only happy ending is for the bride and groom. Adam disappears during the reception, so after all of her wedding obligations Jill goes looking for him. Apparently not only did Adam visit his family in Colorado for Thanksgiving but also visited with his ex-girlfriend, who has now moved to Dallas to be with Adam. This was a detail he neglected to give Jill, claiming he didn’t want to ruin the wedding.
Fortunately the commitmently-challenged Cooper was available to be Jill’s date to her company Christmas party; since she did not want to face Adam and his girlfriend alone. Not only was Cooper a lot of fun but he made sure that Adam knew to stay away from Jill. Whether it is divine intervention or just pure luck, Jill is excited to be headed to Chicago for a week of work, to spend some time with Brian and be far away from Adam.
In Chicago not only do Brian and Jill spend their days together paired up on a project, but their company takes everyone out for drinks or dinner each night. Between work and dinner one night Brian accompanies Jill back to her hotel so that she can change. There is a knock at the door and Jill is surprised to see a bottle of wine and chocolate covered strawberries being delivered; Adam’s attempt at making amends. After the delivery Jill tells Brian what happened with Adam at the wedding. Brian can’t believe that Adam treated Jill that way, but is excited to learn that she is now available and knows that he needs to make her week in Chicago count.
I thought this was good place to end the synopsis and not give away the ending to the story. Let me know what you think! Email me (kate@kateolynch.com) or comment on the post.
