It’s Mario Time!

December1

We’ve had a Wii for about a year and a half, thanks to my dad. . .but we haven’t really played with it in quite some time. We really only had a few discs, a lot of multi-game discs and then “Cooking with Mama.” That was until the weekend before Thanksgiving when I learned that Super Mario Brothers had been released for the Wii. . .

My friend Lacee rented it from Blockbuster after we saw a preview for it before the midnight showing of New Moon we went to. She started playing it and invited me over. . .after a few hours of playing I was hooked and went straight to Target on my way home to buy it.

I was a little surprised when the Target employee asked me, “Are you sure you want to buy that?” I said yes. “Really, you’re sure?” What the heck?? Should he really be trying to talk me out of spending my money?

I have been playing constantly. . .though I haven’t made it very far. I’ve gotten sidetracked with the idea of building up a large buffer of lives. . .I think currently I have 71. . .that way I don’t have to be so nervous when it takes a few attempts to complete a level.

Here’s a little video preview for you, just hearing the music makes me want to play! So if I’m a slacker with the blogging thing again. . .this is the reason why!

Revisiting an Old Favorite

July26

I always wonder, would I rewatch a TV series if I owned it on DVD? And the answer is in fact yes. I don’t do it often or with many shows. There are only two shows that I seem to rewatch on DVD, even though I own quite a few.

Those two shows are Felicity and Gilmore Girls.

Felicity started my sophomore year of college and I was fan from the beginning, the only problem was the WB was no longer available in College Station my last semester, so I stopped watching it and had to wait to finish the series until it was available on DVD.

felicityDVD

I’m not 100% sure why I love this show, but for some reason I do! Despite the fact that my brother always refers to it as “feelin’ sh*tty”. . .I can understand he thoughts because it definitely seems more female focused.

Probably the fact that I was in college and this show was based on a group of college friends I could relate. Though fortunately I didn’t have to experience a roommate like Megan, but would have been highly entertained by Sean. But my main reason for liking this show most was because I wish I had done something as elaborate as move across the country and try out a new place instead of just staying in Texas.

I started rewatching Felicity last weekend and have been really enjoying it. I seemed to forget most of the details of the story line but they are slowly coming back to me as I watch. Ever since her days on the Mickey Mouse Club I have been a Keri Russell fan. I think that is what initially drew me to the show, since her character was the focus.

J.J. Abrams created this show which I think is somewhat ironic because he moved on to Alias, Lost, Fringe and Star Trek the movie. Though, in watching his other shows I am impressed at his loyalty and the way he seems to have brought many actors and actresses along with him from project to project.

So. . .if you’ve been wondering, that’s what I have been up to in a lot of my spare time. And I am still (even though the show has ended and been finished for years) rooting for Ben over Noel. . .

I miss the good old days of the WB, Felicity, Dawson’s Creek and Gilmore Girls. . .the CW dramas just aren’t the same.

To Apologize for My Absence. . .

July22

I wanted to share a funny video with you. My friend Joe introduced me to the TLC show, “The Little Couple” a few weeks back. If you haven’t watched this show yet, I totally recommend it! Jenn & Bill are so fun and not to mention cute. They live in Houston, which is fun to watch because having spent a fair share of time in H-town I have seen a lot of the places shown in the episodes.

In last night’s episode Jenn and Bill receive some disturbing news that there has been a break in in the apartment complex which concerns them. Jenn decides to take a self defense class, and that is where the video comes from:

Sorry for the poor quality of the video, but I captured it with my cellphone. I am pretty sure you will still enjoy it!

Never, fear wine o. wednesday will still occur so check back later to see what vino I am enjoying.

Fat Tuesday Celebrations

February24

My no spending money plan was going great until my friend Mia (just kidding, Mai!), sent out an email about going out tonight. If you have ever been fortunate enough to be a part of one of these email chains, you know they can be overwhelming and sort of peer pressure you into things (in a good way). We’ve actually had too many response in one chain that Google had to start a new email conversation in my inbox. . .yikes! Apparently 100 emails is the limit per conversation in gmail if anyone was wondering.

The plan was to meet up at BWW around 7:00 (if you don’t know what BWW is, sorry? Some mystery is probably best as you will see from the story below.) So I carpooled with Lacee and Brett since we were all heading south. . .and I set a limit of $10 for myself including tip. I was successful at keeping up with the no drinking during the week though. Yay for that!

Anyway. . .there we were sitting around enjoying $0.40 wings, all 15 of us. . .and around 9:30ish the original event planners (aka Mai and her friends) all left. We didn’t mind, those that were drinking ordered another round of beers and we watched the Texas A&M men’s basketball team win the game against Nebraska in the last three seconds. WHOOP!
Around 10 or so we all asked for our checks, except for Joe who was smart enough to just go to the bar and order. Little did we know it would be another 30 minutes before we could leave? Waiterboy didn’t seem to understand that when we all simultaneously asked for our bills that we were ALL ready to leave, not just a few of us. One at a time he would bring our checks. When Matt asked the waiterboy on his 3rd trip to our table for his check, waiterboy acted annoyed because he hadn’t had time to “figure out” Matt’s check. What? Is it really that hard when there are only two people left without a bill??? I don’t think so!

Matt gets his bill, pays cash, and waiterboy takes the cash to go make change and get Paige’s tab (mind you we have already asked 3 times for her tab as well). He finally returns with the last check, whew. . .looks like we’re gonna be able to leave soon, but dang it, Paige is paying with a credit card which means. . .we’ll be waiting on him AGAIN.

What seemed like an eternity later, he returns with Paige’s credit card slip for her to sign. . .but we aren’t in the clear just yet. . .as Paige is signing. . .waiterboy awkwardly stands at the corner of our table holding up a bill, tells us that someone didn’t pay. And at which point did this become our problem?

He tells us that there were two appetizers and a beer someone walked out on. . .thinking back now, this seems like a really odd combination to be left unpaid. I mean if it were two beers and an appetizer, sure I get it, one person walked their tab. But two appetizers and one beer, who orders that?? Obviously genius waiter was not keeping up with who ordered what and when they left. He doesn’t stop there. . .he tells us that these items were ordered before he took over our table. . .well, there’s your first clue buddy that they aren’t our items. He was the only delightful waiter that we’d had all night, lucky us!

“Who wants to pick up these items?” He asks us as if this were a normal way to handle the situation. We all awkwardly look away and respond, “Not me!” He obviously wasn’t satisfied with our response and uncomfortably lingered at our table. As soon as he stepped away to check with another large table to see if they would claim the items, we bolted. . .but at the door Paige realized she didn’t keep a copy of her receipt. Seeing as how pleasant waiterboy was, she wanted legitimate proof of her tab in case he decided to charge her for the items anyway.

Waiterboy takes this as an opportunity to try and collect for these items from Paige and follows her to the hostess stand. At which I thought we were gonna see Matt punch him, which would’ve been cool.

The hostess watches this exchange and hears Matt say, “Obviously you weren’t really on top of things tonight and we aren’t responsible for this.” Waiterboy throws his hands in the air, exclaims, “WHATEVER,” and storms off. A fellow waitress says, “Want me to get the manager?”

The manger was very nice and very apologetic, props to him! At this point the night was done, and regrettably there was no rumble at BWW. . .which totally would have been the perfect end. . .

So what started out as a chill evening with friends turns into drama-filled event!

**Personal disclaimer: I really have no issue with waiters unless they are never polite. There is most definitely a reason that I have never been a waitress; I would be aweful at it and I know it!

The Trials of Ted Haggard

January29

This is probably one of the most random posts I have done so far and might ever do, who knows? I have my DVR set to record Oprah everyday and didn’t realize she was interviewing Ted Haggard. You may not know who Haggard is, you may not care. . .but he was the pastor of a mega church in Colorado Springs that in 2006 was outed for having a homosexual relationship.

ted-haggard

Again, you may not care. . .but the reason this pops up on my radar is, I’ve heard him speak before. One summer when I was in college our youth group went to Colorado Springs for a conference that was being held at New Life (Haggard’s then church) and he was one of the speakers.

He is popping up again because Alexandra Pelosi (Senator Nancy Pelosi’s daughter) did a documentary on his “crisis” as he calls it for HBO that aired tonight.

I’m not going to comment on him and what he did, rather what I want to talk about is the way the church treated him. In both the interview with Oprah and the documentary he discusses the “punishment” he received from his church. He and his family were exiled from the state of Colorado, forced to leave their home and the kids had to leave their school.

This is so disturbing (or maybe even hypocritical) to me. Church is family, and his family turned their backs on him. That might seem harsh for me to say and I’m aware as I’m an outsider looking in.

I think Haggard summed up my feelings best in the documentary when he said: “They (his church) would have realized that I am their business. Someone struggling with sin is the purpose of the churches on earth. The churches on earth are here to help people with their sin problems.

(Side note – sin in this case is how his church described his actions, again I am not commenting on the choices he made.)

The ironic thing to me is, he started that church in the ‘80s and he is a big part of what the church is today.

I know that he made some bad choices and has made a lot of people mad but I am amazed at the enjoyment the new media seemed and seems to get from beating him down. I guess being a pastor made this such a dramatic “fall from grace.”

I wish him and his family all the best. Okay, I’m off my soap box now, thanks for letting me rant. See I told you it would be random, but since this my blog and this is what I’ve been pondering I thought I would share it here. . .thoughts? And you can disagree with me. . .
