City of Bones | Cassandra Clare

Now that I have finished reading City of Bones I can cross 7 of the 10 Books to Movies in 2013 I am attempting to read.  (see my post here)  I decided to go ahead and read City of Bones because it will be released in theaters August 21st and I wanted to be sure to have it finished before then.  I actually ended up listening to this book because I drove out to west Texas last weekend and had about 11 hours in the car to kill so I thought why not?  Unlike with The Great Gatsby, I really enjoyed the woman who read this book.  Sorry Tim Robbins, you should probably just stick to acting!

One thing before I get started, I believe that the name of this book is City of Bones, but I noticed the movie seems to be called The Mortal Instruments.  So, I am just going to call it City of Bones.

The book starts out by introducing us to Clarissa aka “Clare” Frey who thinks she’s living a normal teenage life in New York City.  She is quickly introduced to a magical world she never even knew existed but learns it is very much a part of her.  Her mother is kidnapped and Clare is forced to rely on her new acquaintances, the shadow hunters, for assistance and protection.  She is instantly drawn to Jace because of the orb of mystery that surrounds him.  The mortal instruments are the weapons and items from the shadow hunters’ world.  Jace helps Clare attempt to find her mother and through this plight they learn just how connected their lives really are even though they had been complete strangers only a few days earlier.

City of Bones was definitely and interesting read but I’m not sure that enjoyed it enough to continue reading the series.  To me this novel could be a standalone book, but Cassandra Clare (the author not the book character) continues this story into 4 follow-up novels.

I am looking forward to seeing this movie when it does come out.  It will be interesting to see it put into action.
