Ender’s Game | Orson Scott Card

I like how the Ender’s Game (Orson Scott Card) starts out in the middle of the action.  You aren’t provided details in an easily laid out manner, but rather you have to pick up the details along the way.  It wasn’t until I talked with my sis, Beth, about this book that I realized Ender’s Game was written in 1985. I have to say thanks to my sis for loaning me Ender’s Game, you rock!

As I was reading Ender’s Game, I couldn’t help but compare it to Hunger Games because it positions children to save the world.  I was fascinated by the descriptions Card used for the different places his younger Ender goes for training. I can’t wait to see how my imagination compares to his vision that will be brought to life when the movie comes out later this year.

Ender’s Game is an easy read that puts your imagination to work.  Ender is the youngest child in his family with an older brother and sister.  At the time he is born there is a population restriction and his parents were only allowed to have 2 children.  Because they “broke the law” and had a third, Ender technically belonged to the government.

He spends his first 6 years of life under heavy observation before the military decides to claim him and test his skills and knowledge at their school.  The book then takes you through Ender’s childhood as he is tested to determine if he can be the next great military leader.

Coming out in November 2013, Ender’s Game will have quite a few well-known actors in the cast.  Asa Butterfield will play Ender, and I have never heard of him.  But Abigail Breslin will play his older sister Valentine, Harrison Ford will play his military leader and Ben Kingsley will play his mentor.

I am looking forward to seeing this movie and wonder if it will be better than the book or if the book will likely outshine the film as often happens.

Next up is another young adult sci-fi novel: Beautiful Creatures.  Now this one has already come out in theaters but I’m still not all that sure what super natural powers these teenagers possess just yet because I’m not all that far into it.

I know it looks like I’m a big sci-fi fan lately, but I’m really not.  After Beautiful Creatures I’m going to have to take a break and most likely get back to chicklit.  But we’ll see.  You can keep up with my reading over on Goodreads if you want and be sure to send me a friend request, I’d love to see what you are reading!

  1. “Ender’s Game” is the first book of a series. Are you planning to read it, or just stick with this one?

    • I would like to read the rest of the series. But I want to read a couple other books first that have been on my “To Read List” a bit longer! Is the rest of the serious just as good?

  2. I don’t know; I haven’t read it! I want to, though. My “To Read” list is seriously getting out of control. This is ridiculous.

  3. Ender’s Game and the rest of the series is my favorite! Ender’s Shadow is amazing too because it’s the whole story told from Bean’s perspective, instead of Ender’s.

The rest of the Bean series is more action packed and the rest of Ender’s series is more philosophical. Love them all!

  4. I have had this book for about 5 years and have yet to read it. It’s next on my list! Thanks for the push Kate!!
