I suggested reading Serena by Ron Rash for this month’s book club because I wanted to read it and I had purchased an audio copy I planned to listen to as I drove to North Carolina. Luckily the ladies in my book club obliged and it was our book. I wish I’d read this one instead of listened to it. I really didn’t enjoy the reader. His multiple voices just weren’t good.
Serena | Ron Rash is set in rural North Carolina in 1929. It is the story of newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton who are trying to create a timber empire. George is ambitious but not nearly as ambitious as Serena who will let no one stand in her way of achieving her goals, even George.
Initially I wanted to read this book because it was being made into a movie staring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. By the time I finished the book though, I’m not so sure I want to see the movie version. I thought this book was well written but I despised the character Serena. She is so self-absorbed and just evil. Rash certainly did a great job of developing her character for the reader.
Unfortunately (maybe fortunately) it doesn’t look like Serena will be easy to see in theaters as it looks like it is going to be a limited release. But with the completion of this book, I have now read 8 of the 10 books on my list of books to movies this year. Not too shabby. I’m not sure if I’ll get the other two read but we’ll see.
What are you reading now?
