The Rockin’ Chair | Steven Manchester

I didn’t have a new book to review for this week so I thought I’d reblog my book review I posted on TipsyLit on Aug 15th.

This is a review of The Rockin’ Chair by Steven Manchester.

This first post of mine on TipsyLit is going to be a bit sappy, not a norm for me so please bear with me for this one!

One of my most treasured childhood memories is spending time with my granddad.  He was the absolute best storyteller and just all around fun!  When I was a kid my grandparents lived on a farm in Alabama.  We would make the trek there from Dallas for Christmas, summer vacation and even Easter.  The thing I remember most is my grandfather’s recliner.  It sat in the corner of their den and he could often be found in it reading, napping, watching TV or with one of us kids in his lap.  As a special little treat for you all, here I am, about age 7, sitting in my granddad’s lap.

Reading The Rockin’ Chair by Steven Manchester took me back to those days of hanging out with my granddad and so for that reason, I really enjoyed this book.

In The Rockin’ Chair we meet the McCarthy’s as they are preparing to say goodbye to their beloved grandmother.  Grandpa John attempts to bring the family together for their goodbyes and summons the grandkids back to his farm.  Throughout the story many heavy topics are covered as this family finally begins to heal and move forward, and for that The Rockin’ Chair is a relatable book for any reader.

I wish I could tell you that while reading the Rockin’ Chair I indulged in my granddad’s favorite libation, but alas we do not have the same preference.  He was a dirty martini drinking man, preferring gin (or maybe it was vodka, no one seems to remember) and vermouth martinis to anything else.  No matter how many times I give a dirty martini a try I just can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone drinks them.  My pairing with this read was white wine; it’s summer time and hotter then all get out so I tend to lean toward wines that are served chilled.

Thanks for venturing down memory lane with me!
