Why Do You Read What You Do?

Or do you read at all?

Do you pick up a book because of the title, the cover, the author, because you’re bored? What is it that draws you to a book?

For me, going to a high school that prided it’s self in literature, I had absolutely no desire to read after graduating. Freshman year we started off reading The Epic of Gilgamesh and by senior year we were reading Dante’s Inferno and Crime & Punishment. These weren’t exactly the best books to force upon teenagers.

Maybe for that reason I have a hard time claiming that I enjoyed read what people call “the classics.” Don’t get me wrong I would still recommend quite a few of the books I read back in the high school days, just not all of them.

These days I am motivated by many different things like:
A friend recommends it
It is about to be made into a movie and I want to see how similar they are
Sometimes it is because of the author
I have even been known to buy a book just because of the cover

So what motivates you to read? And what is your favorite book you’ve read so far?
