La Vendimia – Rioja, 2006
On my last trip to World Market, I bought this wine solely based on the label. I haven’t really come to a conclusion as to whether or not that was a wise way to make a choice. But isn’t the label cute?
This is a Spanish wine called a Rioja. I had never even heard of that kind of wine before, in fact I had somehow gotten in my mind that this was a Tempranillo and it wasn’t until I opened it that I realized it wasn’t. Rioja wine is actually named for the La Rioja community in Spain but the Rioja grapes can actually be grown in several areas of Spain.
The first surprise came when I uncorked the bottle and there seemed to be a residue of salt along the neck of the bottle. Can anyone enlighten me as to what that was? ‘Cause I have no idea.
I think that this isn’t a bad wine but it also isn’t my favorite. It has a nice fruity taste to start and is quickly followed with a spicy kick which balances it out nicely.
I recommend giving this wine a whirl especially if you are into spicey wines, if you aren’t you probably should pass because the spice can be a little overwhelming. But for right around $10 it’s not a bad bottle to have around the house.
On a side note, if you have a World Market around you that sells wine, I recommend perusing their wine section. Their selections seem to be really reasonably priced and they offer a wide variety of unique wines.
