While reading Beautiful Creature (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl), I realized I probably should add a sci-fi section to this blog since I seem to be stuck in this genre. I never would have thought of myself as a sci-fi fan, but maybe I am?
In all honesty I probably wouldn’t have thought to read Beautiful Creatures if I hadn’t realized it was being made into a movie and I added it to my 10 Books to Movies in 2013 list. Finishing this book means I can officially say I’ve read 4 of the 10 books. Technically I’ve read 5 but I read The Great Gatsby a long time ago and want to reread it.
Beautiful Creatures was an interesting read, but it’s pretty long. I believe the paperback version is close to 700 pages. It went relatively fast, there were just times I wanted to hit the fast forward button and find out what was going to happen.
Beautiful Creatures was set in South Carolina in a town called Gatlin that is more than proud of the role the town played in the Civil War. This small town isn’t used to new students and when Lena Duchannes appears on the first day of school she is the talk of the town. Not only is she new to town but she is the niece of the town shut in, scary Old Man Ravenwood. It isn’t long after her arrival that Ethan Wate realizes that he’s known Lena for most of his life. She is in his dreams.
The mysterious circumstances that connect Lena and Ethan bonds them together as they try to unravel the mystery of their connection and Lena’s future. As Lena’s 16th birthday approaches her looming future puts a wedge between she and Ethan that she isn’t sure they can move past.
I’m undecided if I will go see this in theaters or not. It came out a little over a month ago and I’m not even sure that it is still out. I might have to wait until it comes out on DVD. Have you seen or read Beautiful Creatures (Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl)? What did you think?
Next up I think I’m going to take a sci-fi break and even a break from my 10 books to movies in 2013 list and read a few of the other book that are on my Kindle shelves. What are you reading?
Hmm… the movie is ‘pretty’. How is that?
If you can do a good job of separating books and their screen counterpoints as their own expression than go to for it… If you don’t, put down that spell book and back away.
I understand the need to cut out things or combine characters, right? The movie is only 2 hours. But when you change a major plot point (the curse) and you dissolve what I thought was the MAJOR overall message – that they could conquer anything if they were together- then I am out.
I saw with several friends- we all read the books together. None of us were fans of the movie.
Except the clothes. I want all the clothes.
