Girl Unmoored was a free download a few weeks back on Amazon and I had seen this book mentioned a couple of places, so I thought I’d get it.
If you are looking for quirky and entertaining then you’ve got to read Girl Unmoored. The setting is 1985 or there about and the story revolves around a young girl named Apron. Apron’s mother has passed away and her dad has a new girlfriend that doesn’t seem to particularly like Apron.
As if her home life being uneasy isn’t enough, Apron’s best friend decides it’s time to trade her in for a more popular model. Copping with all of these changes leaves Apron confused and unhappy, then she meets Jesus. Okay not the guy up in the sky but rather the actor who plays Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, Mike. Mike and his partner Chad own a flower shop and develop a friendship with Apron that seems help them all cope with their unusual circumstances. Despite being young Apron is able to teach Mike and Chad how to survive the loss of a loved one and still go on with life, while Mike and Chad teach Apron to not hate.
This is most definitely a very quick read that keeps you hooked wanting to find out where the author is headed with story. Girl Unmoored is Jennifer Gooch Hummer’s first novel and is quite well written. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. In a way this book reminded me of the movie Juno; not that it mimicked the story line but more for the quirkiness and narration.
Even though the setting of Girl Unmoored book is the 80’s it wasn’t overly tied to that decade and could have been a story about a child today going through the various struggles that Apron endured.
So, if you’re stuck wondering what to read, and you’ve already read Creative Choas (hint, hint, if you haven’t, head here to buy it), check out Girl Unmoored by Jennifer Gooch Hummer. I’m confident you’ll thank me later.
