wine o. wednesday #4

(yes. . .I know, once again it’s a day early, but that’s because tomorrow New Year’s Eve)

I have been holding onto this bottle of the Captain’s Reserve Syrah from the Rubicon Estate (owned by Francis Ford Coppola), since my trip to Napa in August.  To be honest I don’t have any recollection of it from our tasting to remember why I bought this bottle.  For the past four months it has been chillin’ in my wine fridge taunting me each time I open the door saying, “Drink me!”

I decided tonight was the night and that was partly because I didn’t want to have to go to the store just for a bottle of wine.  Not out of laziness, because one of my favorite things to do is to peruse the wine department at a grocery store, liquor store or even the occasional gas station, I was just looking forward to heading straight home.  I don’t know about you but the holidays have kept me busy and I haven’t had much time to just relax at take it easy.  Don’t get me wrong I have enjoyed spending time with family and friends but I am ready for a little quiet time.

But, back to more important things. . .the wine.  Upon tasting my first few sips, I was highly disappointed with this bottle and almost wished I had taken a trip to the store for something different.  However, this wine must truly be an example of the necessity of aging.  The longer I let the wine sit in my glass the better it gets.  I still wouldn’t say I am crazy out it but it isn’t as bad as I had originally thought.

Sadly this is not a wine I am going to recommend to anyone.  Ultimately this isn’t a big deal because the Captain’s Reserve wines can only be purchased at the winery as far as I know.

Here’s too hoping for a better wine next week, so will I leave you with this parting thought. . .que syrah, syrah. . .

***I feel as if I should update this post and let you know that even after letting my glass of wine sit out for over an hour. . .it never got any better.  But here’s hoping that when I go back to that bottle (probably tomorrow), it will have aged enough to at least taste decent! (added 12/31/08)
