A few weeks ago I made a trip out to Lubbock, TX to visit my friend Kandice (she blogs over at Barque & Bite). There wasn’t much on the agenda for the weekend other than catching up. A few years ago at GrapeFest I tried the Pinot Noir from Pheasant Ridge and thought it was really good. So I suggested we go visit the winery.
I didn’t realize the winery was going to be a bit out of town and in the middle of nowhere. If I remember correctly we had to take a dirt/gravel road to get to the winery.
Once we got to Pheasant Ridge we had the tasting room to ourselves and I’m pretty sure we tasted everything available. Now I’m not normally a fan of Texas wines but I really enjoy several of their varietals.
My favorite varietal, which unfortunately is not pictured here, was the Chenin Blanc. I’m not sure if I’ve ever had one before but I really enjoyed it and left with a few bottles. The Proprietor’s Reserve that was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. You know how I love blends so of course this was one of my favorites.
I also liked the Cabernet Sauvignon, in fact I thought it was better than the Special Reserve Cabernet. Of course the Pinot Noir was great though not exactly as I remembered it from a few years ago.
If you’re out in the Lubbock area you should definitely stop by Pheasant Ridge, I think it’s worth the drive down the gravel road.
