It has been just over a month since I started container gardening. The progress has been slow…or maybe I’m just antsy. Though in the last month I’ve learned a lot of things and done a few things wrong. I did successfully fight off the rabbit trying to set up residence in the bottom container of my garden. She made 2 attempts and hasn’t been back for weeks. Whew!
Since starting my garden I have added a few things and also made some changes. A local nursery was closing out a few different fruit trees so I picked up a Georgia Peach tree for $7.50. I can’t really complain about that! I also picked up another. I also planted some chive seeds. After watching how some of the plants were doing I moved the first strawberry plant up top where the cilantro was and the cilantro went on bottom. Remember I talked about it last week? You can read it here. The strawberry plant is slowly perking up, the cilantro however I think is dying a slow death, because it actually looks worse now.
I can’t decide if I should bring this plant inside or just start over with a new cilantro plant. Any suggestions? I’m really sad it isn’t doing better because I keep wanting to use it.
The second strawberry plant that I planted is doing great. Check out all these blossoms and the start of quite a few strawberries.
I am SO excited for my strawberries! It looks like at least 8 are coming in on that clump and the plant is really starting to spread out. No blossoms on the plant moved up top, but it is growing and new shoots are growing. I think that’s a positive sign.
Behind the plant you can see the mini “picket fence” I installed around the bottom to keep the rabbit out. And next to the strawberry plant are my cauliflower seedlings. They really did well. After researching when to transplant, I thought these were good to go and gave some to both of the ladies over at Life is a Run and I’m not sure I should have. The seedlings I moved all croaked.
Pedro, my lime tree, is still trucking a long. These two limes were just tiny little limes at the beginning, looking like this:
But now they look like this:
I really had no idea it would take so long for limes to grow; and know they aren’t key limes so they’ve still got a way to go!
My cucumber plant hasn’t really made much progress but it is growing. While on the other hand my bell pepper and jalapeno pepper plants have had quite a few blooms. Unfortunately one of bell pepper plants blooms then the blooms die. I pinched them off so that they will continue to grow and I do see signs of new growth.
I’m just a little concerned the leaves are a bit yellow and am most likely over watering, so I’ve been going every few days between watering. I’ve got a baby jalapeno busy growing but nothing to document and show off just yet. Here is the one bell pepper that I do have.
It seems to be growing great! While my tomato plant doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong it is getting taller but check out the weird coloring on the leaves. Again I think I’m over watering but last Friday I moved my basil plant into the pot to try to help them both grow better. I hadn’t water since the day after moving the basil plant and it’s turning yellow. But we have gotten some rain and I can’t control that. I do know the pot is draining, but I’m wondering if it’s maybe not draining fast enough.
Hopefully this next week with no rain in the forecast will help dry things out and I’ll see some growth! I’m also hoping that it is the extra moisture in the soil causing the mushrooms to spring up and that as the soil dries out they will disappear.
