Getting the Pretty Back by Molly Ringwald | Book Review

I have been an absolute slacker when it comes to reading these days, so when I made a trip to Houston last week I decided to use that time to listen to a book on tape.  So I headed over to audible.com and was excited to see Getting the Pretty Back by Molly Ringwald as an option.  It wasn’t even 5 hours long so I thought that was perfect and since it was on my list over on Goodreads I downloaded it.

Even though I’m not really a child of the 80’s nor did I “come of age” in the 80’s, I can still quote Pretty in Pink starring Molly Ringwald even when it isn’t on.  When we discovered that movie in my house we started watching it over and over and over again.  In fact it was even on TV yesterday and I was tempted to turn it on, but I resisted since I do own it on DVD.

Apparently I didn’t really read the description of Getting the Pretty Back by Molly Ringwald very well before adding it to my “to-read” list or downloading it.  Probably about an hour and a half outside of Houston I decided to start listening to this book.  I was expecting more of a biography that told the story of Molly Ringwald in her post “brat pack” days.  What I got instead was her girlfriend’s guide to living and finding the perfect lipstick. Not at all what I was expecting.

In chapter three she goes over a list of wardrobe staples you should have and dos and don’ts about how to cut your hair.  I didn’t make it much further past that.  While I do love Molly Ringwald for her quirkiness in Pretty in Pink, the Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles; I did not grow up with her as my style icon and have no desire to read anyone’s “girlfriend’s guide” to life.  Just not my cup of tea.

The first few chapters and the intro of Getting the Pretty Back by Molly Ringwald were interesting because they were more auto-biographical.  I may get back to this book one day, but for now I think I”ll have to leave this read to die hard Molly Ringwald fans.  If you’re interested in reading Getting the Pretty Back by Molly Ringwald, you can find it here.

In the meantime I will leave you with the ultimate Jake Ryan picture….tell me you wouldn’t get in that red Porsche with him?
