How to Eat a Cupcake | Meg Donohue

I had seen How to Eat a Cupcake circulating through many of the chicklit blogs awhile back and put it on my to read list.  So, when I saw it on sale on Amazon I decided it was time to buy it.  Once it was on my kindle, I couldn’t wait to read it.

How to Eat a Cupcake (Meg Donohue) is not a book about how to actually eat a cupcake but rather the story of two life long friends whose relationship could more accurately be described as sisterly.  This story is told from the perspective of each girl, Annie and Julie.  Julie is the only daughter of a wealthy San Francisco family that has had an easy life of privilege and success.  Annie is the only daughter of single mother who ran away from Ecuador at age 16 because she got pregnant and was kicked out of her house.  Unlike Julie, Annie’s life has been full of hard times and loss.  Annie’s mother Lucia spent her entire adult life as the nanny and cook for Julia’s family while living in the carriage house located on the family’s property.  Knowing that Julia was going to be an only child, her mother Lolly was thrilled that Lucia had a daughter the same age that could grow up alongside her daughter.

How to Eat a Cupcake CoverJulia’s parents did all they could to provide Annie with the same life that Julia had by paying for her to attend the same private school.  Only problem is, as soon as the girls walk through the halls at Devon Prep, they instantly see how different their worlds truly are.  Before graduation the gap between these two girls grows so wide that restoring their friendship seems impossible after rumors are spread about Annie that Julia started.

In How to Eat a Cupcake, we meet Annie and Julie about 10 years after graduating high school and both girls have done quite a bit of growing up.  Though it quickly becomes evident that letting go of the past seems like an impossibility.

Julia approaches Annie with an idea that allows Annie to fulfill her life long dream all the while gives Julia an opportunity to repair the damage she caused many years ago.  This story of friendship, heartache and love is an easy, fun read that I really enjoyed.

While reading this book, I learned that Red Velvet Cake used to be made with beets to give it the red color.  Did you know that?  I had no clue and now I’m totally intrigued!  Look for a red velvet cake recipe with beets coming to the blog soon!

I definitely recommend giving How to Eat a Cupcake a read, you’ll enjoy it if you’re looking for something light-hearted and fun!

Right now the Kindle edition is currently available for only $1.99
